| Trashing The Climate Resource Recycling June 13, 2008 Resource Recycling Is zero waste the answer to the growing problem of climate change? According to Stop Trashing the Climate, a joint report on effects of current solid waste policies on the climate, the zero waste approach would be the fastest, cheapest and most effective strategy to reduce greenhouse gasses. The joint report by the Institute for Self-Reliance (Washington), Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (Berkeley, California) and Eco-Cycle (Boulder, Colorado), claims that significantly decreasing waste disposed in landfills and incinerators would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to closing 21 percent of all U.S. coal-fired power plants. Suggestions from the report include phasing out incinerators entirely, upping tipping fees for landfills, expand pay-as-you-throw programs and mandate packaging responsibility for manufacturers and brand owners. |
